Never ridden a quad bike before? You're in good company. Most of the people who ride with us every week are complete beginners, and nearly all of them come back from the dunes grinning and asking for a longer session next time.
If you're thinking about quad biking in Abu Dhabi but feel a bit nervous, this guide is for you. We'll cover how it works, what to wear, who can ride, and a few simple tips that'll make your first ride a lot more fun.
What Is Quad Biking?
A quad bike, also called an ATV (all-terrain vehicle), is a four-wheeled motorbike designed for rough ground like sand. You sit on it like a motorbike, steer with handlebars and control the speed with a thumb throttle.
Most of the bikes we use for desert tours are automatic, so there are no gears to worry about. Press the throttle to go, use the brakes to slow down, and steer. That's it. If you can ride a bicycle, you can ride a quad bike.
How a Guided Quad Bike Ride Works
1. Safety Briefing
Every ride starts with a short safety talk from our marshal. You'll learn where the throttle and brakes are, how to sit and lean, the hand signals used on the route, and what to do if you want to stop.
2. A Short Practice
Before heading into the dunes, you'll do a quick practice loop on flat sand to get a feel for the bike. Take your time. There's no rush.
3. Follow the Guide
The marshal leads the group in a line across the desert. You'll ride over soft dunes and sandy flats, following the guide's tracks. The pace is set for the group, so nobody gets left behind.
4. Photo Stops
Most rides include a stop at a scenic point where you can take photos with your bike and the dunes.
Who Can Ride?
Every company has its own rules, but here's the general idea:
- Solo riders usually need to be at least 16 years old.
- Younger guests may ride as passengers on larger bikes, where permitted.
- No driving licence is needed for guided desert quad biking with us.
- Quad biking is not recommended for pregnant women or people with back, neck or heart problems.
What to Wear
- Closed shoes such as trainers or boots, not flip-flops
- Long, light trousers to protect your legs from sand and heat
- Sunglasses, though goggles are often provided
- A scarf or buff to cover your nose and mouth from the dust
- Sunscreen on any exposed skin
We provide helmets, and wearing one is required.
Beginner Tips for Your First Ride
- Relax your grip. Holding the handlebars too tightly makes your arms tired. Hold firm but loose.
- Look ahead, not down. Your bike follows your eyes, so look where you want to go.
- Use a smooth throttle. Squeeze it gently rather than jabbing it.
- Lean into turns. Shift your body weight slightly toward the inside of the turn.
- Keep your distance. Leave a few bike-lengths between you and the rider ahead.
- Stand up slightly on bumps. This lets your legs absorb the shock.
- Don't be afraid to go slow. The guide would rather you enjoy a steady ride than push too hard.
Is Quad Biking Safe?
Yes, when it's guided properly. Our marshals choose routes that suit the group's experience, avoid steep and risky dunes with beginners, and keep a close eye on every rider. Following instructions, wearing your helmet and riding within your comfort zone are the keys to a safe ride.

Quad Bike or Dune Buggy?
If you'd rather sit side by side with a friend, or you'd like a bit more power and stability, a dune buggy might suit you better. Check out our guide on Dune Buggy vs Quad Bike in Abu Dhabi.
Common Beginner Mistakes When Quad Biking in Abu Dhabi
- Grabbing the brake on a descent. Sudden braking on a downhill can make the bike slide. Ease off the throttle and brake gently instead.
- Stopping halfway up a dune. Keep a steady throttle all the way to the top. If you lose momentum, the marshal will help you turn safely.
- Following too closely. Sand flicked up by the bike ahead gets in your eyes and reduces your reaction time.
- Riding stiffly. Tense arms and a rigid back make the ride bumpy and tiring. Stay loose and let the bike move.
- Ignoring hand signals. The marshal's signals tell you when to slow down, stop or watch out. Keep an eye on them.
What a First Quad Biking Session in Abu Dhabi Really Feels Like
The first two minutes usually feel a bit wobbly. By minute five, most riders are smiling. By the end, they're asking how much a longer ride costs. Quad biking in Abu Dhabi has a gentle learning curve, and the soft sand is forgiving at the slow speeds beginners ride at. The feeling of cresting a dune and seeing nothing but golden sand in every direction is something you won't forget.
