Al Khatim Desert Safari: Abu Dhabi's Famous Red Dunes

Ask anyone in Abu Dhabi where to find the best dunes close to the city, and you'll hear one name again and again: Al Khatim. Rolling, deep-red sand ridges stretch as far as you can see, and they're less than an hour from downtown. It's the perfect setting for an Al Khatim desert safari, and it's where many of our trips take place.

Whether you want the thrill of dune bashing, a quiet sunset, a camel ride or a full evening with dinner and shows, the Al Khatim desert has it all, without the long drive.

Where Is Al Khatim?

Al Khatim is an area of open desert southeast of Abu Dhabi city, off the Abu Dhabi–Al Ain road. The drive from central Abu Dhabi takes roughly 45–60 minutes, depending on where you're staying. From Yas Island or Khalifa City, it's even closer.

This easy access is a big reason why Al Khatim is so popular. You get proper, towering dunes without spending half your day in the car.

Why Choose an Al Khatim Desert Safari?

Deep Red Sand

The sand in Al Khatim has a rich orange-red colour that glows at sunset. It photographs beautifully, and it's softer and finer than many other desert areas.

Big, Varied Dunes

From gentle rolling slopes to steep, high ridges, the Al Khatim dunes suit every kind of ride. Our drivers can keep it smooth for families or take on the bigger dunes for thrill-seekers.

Close to the City

At under an hour from most Abu Dhabi hotels, it's the most convenient real desert experience you'll find.

Quieter Than Many Desert Areas

Compared with the busiest desert areas in the UAE, Al Khatim usually feels more open and peaceful, with fewer vehicles on the dunes.

What a Day in the Al Khatim Desert Looks Like

Your driver picks you up from your hotel and heads out along the Al Ain road. The skyline slowly fades and the landscape turns to open sand. At the edge of the desert, we lower the tyre pressure and head into the dunes for 30–45 minutes of dune bashing.

As the sun drops, we stop on a high ridge so you can watch the sky change colour over the red sand. Then it's on to camp for a camel ride, sandboarding, henna and Arabic coffee, followed by a BBQ dinner with Tanoura, fire and belly dance shows.

Wildlife and Nature in Al Khatim

Keep your eyes open. The Al Khatim desert is home to hardy plants like ghaf trees and desert shrubs, and if you're lucky you may spot birds of prey, desert lizards or the tracks of small animals in the morning sand. Camel farms in the area are a common sight too.

Tips for Your Al Khatim Desert Safari

  • Bring sunglasses, as the red sand reflects a lot of light.
  • In winter, bring a light jacket, because evenings in the open desert cool down quickly.
  • Morning trips are the best choice in summer.
  • Charge your phone. Al Khatim sunsets are worth a lot of photos.

Al Khatim Desert Safari: Morning, Evening or Overnight?

Each time of day shows Al Khatim in a different light. In the morning, the dunes are cool, untouched and perfect for photography. The evening brings the famous red-gold sunset, followed by dinner and shows at camp. Overnight guests get the best of both: a sunset, a sky full of stars far from city lights and a quiet sunrise over the dunes. If it's your first visit, the evening Al Khatim desert safari is our top recommendation.

Al Khatim for Families and Groups

Because it's so close to the city, Al Khatim is ideal for families with young children who don't want a long drive. It's also popular for corporate outings and big groups, since there's plenty of space to spread out and run activities like dune buggy convoys and sandboarding races.
