What Happens on an Evening Desert Safari in Abu Dhabi? An Hour-by-Hour Guide

"So what do we actually do out there?" It's one of the questions we hear most, usually from guests who've seen the photos but aren't quite sure how the day fits together. Fair enough. Seven hours in the desert sounds like a lot until you see how quickly it flies by.

After 20 years of running trips, here's an honest, hour-by-hour look at what to expect on an evening desert safari in Abu Dhabi: when you'll be picked up, what happens in the dunes, what dinner looks like and when you'll be back at your hotel.

Sun setting over rolling sand dunes

2:30 PM – 3:30 PM: Hotel Pickup

Your day starts in your hotel lobby. The exact pickup time depends on the season, because we plan everything around sunset. In winter, when the sun sets earlier, pickup is closer to 2:30 PM. In summer it moves later.

Your driver arrives in a 4x4, usually a Toyota Land Cruiser, and if you're on a shared tour, there may be a few other guests in the car. The drive out to the desert takes 45 to 60 minutes. Use it. Ask your driver about life in the UAE, the desert, or where to eat in Abu Dhabi. They've usually got great tips.

Tip: Be in the lobby 5–10 minutes early. Drivers often have several pickups on the route, and a smooth start keeps everyone's schedule on track.

Around 4:00 PM: Arrival at the Desert Edge

Before going into the dunes, the driver stops to lower the tyre pressure. Softer tyres grip the sand better and make the ride smoother. It's also a good moment for a quick bathroom stop, a stretch and the first round of photos.

4:15 PM – 5:00 PM: Dune Bashing

This is the bit everyone talks about. Your driver heads into the red dunes and starts climbing, sliding and swooping across the sand. It feels a bit like a roller coaster, but with no track.

Here's what you should know:

  • The drive lasts about 30 to 45 minutes.
  • You can ask the driver to go gentler or wilder. They'll adjust.
  • Keep your seatbelt on the entire time.
  • If you get motion sick, sit in the front and look at the horizon.

Dune bashing isn't recommended for pregnant women, people with back or heart problems, or very young children. If that's you, let us know when booking. We can skip it or keep the drive very gentle.

Around 5:00 PM – 5:30 PM: Sunset Photo Stop

Your driver parks on a high dune and everyone gets out. The sand is soft, the air starts to cool, and the sun drops toward the horizon, turning the whole desert orange and gold. It's quiet and beautiful, and for many guests it's the highlight of the day.

Photo tip: Shoot with the sun behind the dunes for silhouettes, or turn around and capture the dunes glowing in the warm light.

6:00 PM: Welcome to Camp

After sunset, you drive the short distance to our Bedouin-style camp. You'll be welcomed with Arabic coffee and dates, the traditional sign of hospitality in the UAE, and shown to the majlis seating area with low cushions, carpets and lanterns.

6:00 PM – 7:30 PM: Camp Activities

Now it's time to explore the camp at your own pace. Most evening packages include:

  • Camel ride. A short, gentle ride around the camp. Great for photos.
  • Sandboarding. Slide down a dune on a board. Climbing back up is the workout.
  • Henna. Traditional designs painted on your hand by our henna artist.
  • Traditional dress. Put on an Emirati kandura or abaya for photos.
  • Refreshments. Tea, coffee, water and soft drinks.

Optional extras like quad biking, a falcon photo or shisha are also available.

7:30 PM – 8:45 PM: BBQ Dinner and Live Shows

As darkness falls, the BBQ fires up. Dinner is a buffet with grilled chicken, lamb and beef kebabs, rice, Arabic mezze like hummus and moutabal, salads, fresh bread, and desserts. There are always plenty of vegetarian dishes too.

While you eat, the entertainment begins:

  • Tanoura dance. A performer in a colourful, layered skirt spins nonstop, creating mesmerising patterns. It's traditionally linked to Sufi whirling.
  • Fire show. A performer juggles and spins fire, lighting up the camp.
  • Belly dance. An energetic performance, often with guests invited to join. (Not held during Ramadan.)

9:00 PM – 9:30 PM: Drop-Off

After the shows, your driver takes you back to the city. Most guests are back at their hotels between 9:00 and 9:30 PM, with full stomachs, sandy shoes and a camera roll full of photos.

What to Bring on an Evening Desert Safari

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Light, comfortable clothes
  • A light jacket or shawl in winter (December–February)
  • Closed shoes or sandals you don't mind filling with sand
  • Phone with a full battery or a power bank
  • A little cash for optional extras

Standard, VIP or ATV: Which Evening Safari Is Best?

If this is your first desert trip, our Evening Desert Safari covers everything above at a great price. If you'd like premium seating and table service at dinner, look at the VIP Desert Safari. If you want to ride a quad bike before sunset, choose the Evening Desert Safari + ATV.

Common Mistakes to Avoid on an Evening Desert Safari in Abu Dhabi

We've seen thousands of guests come through camp. Here are the small mistakes that can take the shine off an otherwise perfect evening, and how to avoid them:

  • Eating a heavy lunch. Dune bashing on a full stomach isn't fun. Have a light meal before pickup and save your appetite for the BBQ.
  • Wearing white. Red desert sand stains. Darker or earthy colours hide it much better.
  • Forgetting a jacket in winter. It's warm when you leave the hotel, but after sunset in December and January the desert can feel properly cold.
  • Letting your phone die. Between dune bashing videos, sunset photos and the fire show, your battery will drain fast. Bring a power bank.
  • Rushing the sunset. Don't spend the whole stop taking selfies. Put the phone down for a few minutes and just watch.
  • Not speaking up. If the dune bashing feels too much, tell your driver. They'd much rather slow down than have you uncomfortable.

Is an Evening Desert Safari in Abu Dhabi Worth It?

For most visitors, yes, and it's often the highlight of their trip. In one evening you get adventure, nature, culture, food and entertainment, with no planning needed on your part. It suits almost every type of traveller, and it's the easiest way to experience the desert if you only have one free evening in Abu Dhabi.
