Desert Camping in Abu Dhabi: What to Pack for an Overnight Desert Safari

Spending a night in the desert is one of the most magical things you can do in the UAE. The silence, the stars, the sunrise — it's a different world. But the desert also has its quirks. It's hot by day, surprisingly cold at night, and there's sand in places you didn't know existed.

The good news is that a bit of smart packing makes all the difference. Here's our complete packing list for desert camping in Abu Dhabi, based on 20 years of hosting overnight guests.

Desert camp with tents and a shaded seating area

First, What Does the Camp Provide?

On our Overnight Desert Safari, you don't need to bring camping gear. We provide:

  • Tent or sleeping area
  • Mattress, pillow and blankets
  • BBQ dinner and breakfast
  • Water, tea, coffee and soft drinks
  • Clean washroom facilities
  • Campfire

So you can focus on personal comfort items. Here's what to pack.

Clothing

For the Afternoon

  • Light, breathable clothes. Cotton or linen work best.
  • A hat or cap for sun protection.
  • Sunglasses, essential for glare and blowing sand.
  • Closed shoes or sturdy sandals. Sand gets hot in the afternoon.

For the Night

  • A warm layer. Desert nights can drop well below daytime temperatures, especially from December to February. A fleece, hoodie or light jacket is a must.
  • Long trousers for the evening.
  • Warm socks. You'll thank us at 3 AM.
  • Comfortable sleepwear.

For the Morning

  • A fresh top for sunrise photos
  • Light scarf or shawl. Early mornings are cool.

Toiletries and Personal Items

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Wet wipes (very useful in the desert)
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Lip balm and moisturiser, as desert air is dry
  • Sunscreen
  • Any personal medication
  • Small towel
  • Contact lens solution and glasses, as sand and lenses don't mix

Tech and Gadgets

  • Power bank. Charging points at camp may be limited.
  • Phone or camera for photos and videos.
  • Small torch or headlamp for walking around the camp at night.
  • Tripod if you want to try night-sky photography.

Optional but Nice to Have

  • Small backpack to keep your things together
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Snacks if you get hungry between meals
  • Book or cards for relaxing around the fire
  • Stargazing app to identify constellations

What NOT to Bring

  • Valuables you don't need. Leave expensive jewellery at the hotel.
  • Heavy luggage. A small bag is all you need.
  • White shoes, unless you want them to turn orange.
  • Drones, unless you have permission. Drone flying in the UAE requires registration and approval.

Night-Time Tips

  • Stargazing: Let your eyes adjust to the dark for 15–20 minutes and avoid looking at your phone screen. You'll see many more stars.
  • Night-sky photography: Use a tripod, a long exposure and night mode on your phone.
  • Stay warm: Layer up before you feel cold. Ask our team for extra blankets.
  • Stay close to camp: The desert is vast and easy to get disoriented in at night.

Sunrise Tips

Set an alarm about 30 minutes before sunrise. Walk up a nearby dune with a hot drink, sit and watch the sky change from deep blue to pink to gold. It's peaceful, and for many guests it's the best moment of the whole trip.

Best Time for Desert Camping in Abu Dhabi

The best season is October to April, when days are warm and nights are cool and comfortable. The coldest nights, ideal for campfires and stargazing, are usually in December and January. Summer nights are warm, so pack lighter and expect a balmy evening.

Quick Packing Checklist

  • Light daytime clothes, hat and sunglasses
  • Warm jacket, long trousers and socks
  • Sleepwear and a fresh top for the morning
  • Toiletries, wet wipes and sanitiser
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Power bank, torch and phone
  • Medication and any personal essentials

Desert Camping in Abu Dhabi: Etiquette and Respect

The desert is a fragile environment and an important part of Emirati heritage. A few simple habits help keep it beautiful for everyone:

  • Take your rubbish with you, or use the bins at camp.
  • Stay on marked paths around the camp area, especially at night.
  • Keep noise down late at night out of respect for other guests.
  • Don't feed or chase wildlife like desert foxes, birds or lizards.
  • Dress modestly when walking around camp, and swimwear isn't appropriate.
  • Ask before photographing staff or other guests.

What the Desert Feels Like at Night

If you've never spent a night in the desert, it can surprise you. The silence is the first thing people notice. There's no traffic and no hum of air conditioning, just the occasional breeze across the sand. The temperature drops quickly after sunset, so the warm layers you packed come out fast. Then the sky does its thing. On a clear night, you'll see thousands of stars, satellites crossing overhead and, if you're lucky, a shooting star or two.

Common Packing Mistakes

  • Only packing summer clothes in winter. It really does get cold.
  • Forgetting a torch. Phone torches work, but they drain your battery.
  • Bringing a huge suitcase. You only need a small backpack.
  • Packing white or delicate clothes. Sand gets into everything.
  • Leaving medication behind. Bring anything you might need overnight.

Desert Camping With Kids

Kids usually love the idea of sleeping in the desert. Pack an extra warm layer, pyjamas, a favourite blanket or soft toy and a small torch of their own. Most children are exhausted by 10 PM after all the activities, so they sleep well.
