A desert safari is fun any time of year, but when you go makes a real difference to how comfortable you'll be, what you'll see and even what you'll pay. After 20 years of running trips in every season, here's our honest guide to the best time for a desert safari in Abu Dhabi, by month and by time of day.
The Short Answer
- Best season: October to April
- Best months: November to March
- Best time of day in summer: Early morning
- Best time of day in winter: Afternoon into evening, for sunset and dinner
Abu Dhabi Desert Weather Month by Month
Temperatures below are typical daytime highs and can vary from year to year.
November to February: Peak Season
This is desert season at its best. Days are warm and sunny, typically in the mid-20s °C, and evenings are cool and comfortable. December and January nights in the desert can feel genuinely cold, which makes campfires and overnight stays extra special.
Good for: Every type of safari: evening, VIP, overnight, quad biking and dune buggies.
Keep in mind: This is the busiest season, so book a few days ahead.
March and April: Warm and Pleasant
The weather starts warming up, but it's still very comfortable, especially in the late afternoon and evening. Sunsets are beautiful, and camps are slightly less crowded than in mid-winter.
Good for: Evening safaris, quad biking, dune buggies.
May and September/October: Hot Shoulder Months
Days get hot, often in the high 30s °C. Mornings and evenings are still manageable, and October quickly becomes pleasant as the season starts.
Good for: Morning safaris and later evening trips.
June to August: Summer
Summer in Abu Dhabi is hot, with daytime temperatures often above 40 °C. But that doesn't mean the desert is off-limits. Safaris run all year, and with smart timing they're still very enjoyable.
Good for: Morning safaris (the best choice), and evening safaris with later pickups.
Bonus: Summer often brings lower prices and quieter camps. Check our Offers page.

Planning Around Ramadan, Eid and Holidays
Ramadan
Desert safaris run during Ramadan, but the experience changes slightly. Belly dance shows are usually not performed, and some camps adjust their timing around Iftar. Many guests love the special, calm atmosphere of a Ramadan evening in the desert.
Eid and Public Holidays
Eid Al Fitr, Eid Al Adha and UAE National Day are very busy. Book early, as camps can sell out. We often run special offers during these times.
School Holidays
Winter and spring breaks bring lots of families to Abu Dhabi. Book at least a few days in advance.
Weather Things to Watch For
- Sandstorms and strong winds: Occasionally, trips may be rescheduled for safety. We'll always let you know in advance.
- Rain: Rare, but it happens a few times a year in winter. Light rain actually makes the sand firmer and great for driving.
- Fog: Early winter mornings can be foggy. It usually clears by mid-morning, and it can make for amazing photos.
Quick Recommendations by Traveller Type
- First-timers (Oct–Apr): Evening Desert Safari
- Summer visitors: Morning Desert Safari or Morning Desert Safari + ATV

Peak vs Off-Peak: What's the Difference?
In peak season (November to March), the weather is at its best, but camps are busier and prices can be a little higher, especially around holidays. Booking a few days in advance is a good idea.
In off-peak season (May to September), camps are quieter, prices are often lower and you get more personal attention. With morning safaris and smart timing, it's still a great experience. Many residents actually prefer summer mornings for this reason.
